Swine Influenza Vaccine

CSL Biotherapies, a subsidiary of CSL Limited, Australia’s leading biopharmaceutical company, welcomes the Rudd Government’s recent announcement of its intention to place an order to supply 10 million Australians with a vaccine against Novel Influenza A (H1N1) or commonly known as swine flu.

CSL is well placed to meet the needs of the Australian population in responding to the current epidemic of Swine Flu. CSL will prepare swine flu vaccination for use in clinical trials to determine the formulation and dosage of the vaccine. The first batches are expected to be manufactured by late July/ early August. The Australian government will determine how the vaccine will be deployed.

CSL, Australia’s leading biopharmaceutical company, also announced today that its US subsidiary, CSL Biotherapies, Inc., has signed a contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to provide Novel A (H1N1) influenza vaccine antigen in bulk form. The vaccine will be manufactured at CSL’s facility in Parkville, Victoria, and will support the HHS pre pandemic influenza preparation efforts. The new vaccine will be tested in clinical trials funded by HHS. The initial order under the contract will be for an amount of USD180 million.

Does Australia need a Human Rights Act? Malcolm Fraser in An open community forum at UNSW

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser will take part in an open community forum at UNSW on Monday, 1 June to discuss the need for human rights protections in Australia.

Hosted by the UNSW Law Society in conjunction with Amnesty International UNSW, “Does Australia Need a Human Rights Act” is a community forum featuring a moderated panel of distinguished speakers. The forum will look at a range of issues from the experience of refugees, to the effects of the anti-terrorism laws, and the case for and against a formal codification of human rights in the Australian context.

Speakers include former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser; former President of the NSW Court of Appeal, Keith Mason; barrister for Dr Mohamed Haneef, Stephen Keim; and director of UNSW’s Gilbert + Tobin Centre for Public Law’s Charter of Human Rights Project, Ed Santow.

Moderating the event will be Gilbert + Tobin Centre for Public Law director, Andrew Lynch. (Read the article)

Medicare rebate for Dental service

Under the Medicare chronic disease dental scheme, Medicare benefits are available for most services provided by a dentist, dental specialist or dental prosthetist in private dental surgeries. The Medicare chronic disease dental scheme allows chronically ill people who are being managed by their GP under an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan access to Medicare rebates for dental services.To receive a Medicare benefit for dental services, patient will first need to meet certain eligibility criteria and be referred by their GP to a dentist. In some cases their GP will refer them directly to a dental prosthetist for denture work.

Who are eligible for dental services under the Medicare chronic disease dental scheme?

To be eligible to claim the rebate for dental service , patient must have a chronic medical condition and complex care needs and their oral health must be impacting on, or likely to impact on, their general health.
