UNSW ROBOCUP 2006

robodogsUNSW’s much-loved robodogs have scored second place in the world 4-Legged League of Robocup 2006, held in Germany.

The rUNSWift team of undergraduate students - Ryan Cassar, Enyang (Eric) Huang, Michael Lake, Andrew Owen and Oleg Sushkov - worked for six months to achieve this impressive result.

Robocup is an international competition using artificial intelligence to compete against some of the world’s most renowned universities in a robotics competition.

In robocup 2006 all-Australian grand final, rUNSWift played the University of Newcastle team, the NuBots, for a final score of 7-3.

Team coordinator Brad Hall said the two teams were very evenly matched, producing an exciting match for the full house.

“NuBots have been close to winning for several years now, and we are happy for them to finally take first place!” he says.

The University’s entry in the Rescue League - CASualty - performed strongly after initial technical glitches. But after making it to the semi-finals, they were unable to proceed due to one crucial piece of wire breaking.

“This was bitterly disappointing to the team especially because they had had some excellent runs,” says Brad.

The UNSW team is supported by NICTA.

I wonder if the robodogs will ever supersede conventional dogs? For one thing, robodogs presumably don’t need to urinate or defacate. Nor do they need “feeding” or to breathe oxygen. I think this is similarly why automobiles went on to supersede horses.
